My Yoga Philosophy

When I first found out the purpose of yoga is to calm the fluctuations of the mind – I nodded my head, “Yes.” That sounded right, we come to our mat to be in the present moment and to clear our mind using meditation, movement and breath. Sounds exactly like what modern media had told me. Then, as I began to dive deeper into my practice off the mat, I was – frankly – pissed and so confused.   If I’m supposed to dig into the darkest part of myself and become familiar with her enough to love her anyway… how is running away with my tight little yoga pants and mat over my shoulder to go “calm my mind” helping me...

Merry & Bright

The boxes upon bins of holiday décor piled to the ceiling in our attic were impressive collections. Each stuffed to the brim with carefully wrapped glass and handmade ornaments, cinnamon-stick reindeer with googly eyes and wreaths for every door, to name a few. Decorating for Christmas time was a daylong endeavor, and somehow every year I wound up being the conductor of The Polar Express. With a cheese-worthy grin, I cranked up the Bing Crosby album on our fancy “surround sound” speakers and get to work.   My family helped intermittently, Mom the most – but I enjoyed the discretion. I loved choosing ornament placement, strategically planting the kindergarten-mushroom-haircut-photo ones in the back of the tree. I would “forget” to take out...
